San Francisco Gravity Fest

San Francisco, California

The first IGSA American race in the 2003 series was a National event held in McLaren Park in San Francisco, just minutes from 3Com park.  The course was about a half mile long with only three turns. Pretty quickly after the start was a right hander. The road drops quickly after the turn and leads into turn two, a lefter. There was a short straight followed by an uphill section. The uphill was probably 10 feet or so, and speeds were fast enough going over the hill there was a momentary feeling of weightlessness. Immediately after the up hill has a fast sweeper to the right, followed by an uphill shutdown area.

Hot Heels 11

Kaunertal, Austria

For the eleventh time Hot Heels took place in the Kaunertal, a valley in the Austrian alps that leads to the Kauner Glazier. Continental Europeans camped out at the finish line, while everyone else slept in the hotels in Fiechten. While there are several villages in the valley, Fiechten is home to the Kiwi, unofficial HQ's of the Americans. The town has one grocery, open only a few hours a day, a dairy, a bakery, a church, and about a dozen hotels!

Nestled in the rolling hills of Switzerland, about halfway between Zurich and Lucerne is the small town of Altbüron. The town has one hotel, and a handful of restaurants, and is only a couple of kilometers wide, like most of the towns in the region. It is also surrounded by rolling hills. There are a plethora of roads to ride out here, running through farms and grassy hillsides.

Yes, this race was in Oklahoma (just miles west of Arkansas), and no, despite rumors, we did not have to push each other around the race course. The course was held on Talimena Scenic Drive, which goes through the Ouachita National Forest. The road is on the Winding Stair Mountain, and is a beautiful drive, if you ever have the opportunity.
